Mini Beasts in your Role Play Area
By: Kathryn Beaney
There is so much that children can learn through Role Play. The theme of your Role Play
area should be changed to ignite the children’s curiosity and imagination. You can change
the area to reflect your current theme or to follow the children’s interests. Include the
children in the planning and preparation and think about what resources you can include
to cover the different areas of the curriculum.
How about the following resources for a Mini Beast theme?
- A small tent with a pillow and blanket inside
- A rucksack
- Magnifying glass
- Tape measure
- Clip board with recording sheets and pencil
- Lots of green material or paper hung from the ceiling
- Spiders webs
- Containers to catch the bugs
- Different areas to hide plastic bugs such as soil, sand, leaves, stones, a piece of grass
- Dressing up clothes
Try and find some real mini beasts outside and take photographs to display.
Make and use a pooter (you may need to look this up!)
Remember to demonstrate how to use the
resources and support the children’s play. Look at
your curriculum and ensure that you include
resources that will cover all areas. By adding the
clip board and pencil you can promote mark
making and maths.
