One hand washes the other; it is a saying that could easily be applicable to the students of Archbishop O’Leary High School who recently donated generously to their young peers currently residing at the YESS facilities. With a cause that was, and continues to be, extremely close to their hearts, the students’ union chose to get involved with YESS because of the amazing concept and opportunity to have teenagers help teenagers currently struggling in the city, who still undeniably parallel the students of O’Leary in so many ways.
The initiative was a huge success; clothes and other necessities were gathered not only from the student body, but also from the staff members of Archbishop O’Leary, the parishioners of the near-by church, St. Matthew Parish, and Anthem Sportswear. Managed by the determined and well-organized hand of Ms. Orysia Huk, O’Leary’s resident chaplain, a 21-passenger bus was soon overflowing with donations that were delivered to the YESS organization by the time Christmas break arrived.
The feedback that was given by the organization was awe-inspiringly moving, and the students felt blessed to have been a part of this great cause. In addition to the clothing and other items that were raised, many cash donations were also directed to the organization, which is currently in dire need of funding. O’Leary will further its responsibility of helping Edmonton’s youth by planning to cook and serve a meal for the service on March 20th.
A challenge should be presented to all other high schools in the greater Edmonton area that are searching for a fulfilling social justice project; to get involved with YESS in any capacity will be undoubtedly appreciated due to recent funding concerns. Truly, there is no greater satisfaction than being able to give back to peers and allow them to see the tangible growth potential in both themselves and their generation.
YESS would like to thank Anissa, Orysia, and the entire Archbishop O’Leary school for their support (they are truly #localheroes)! It’s always amazing to see youth helping youth. Our city will be in good hands for generations to come!
