I left my house in Florida early on a beautiful June morning, knowing
I had a long travel day ahead. Heading to Crescent City—a small
Northern California town almost on the coastal border of Oregon,
is no easy feat. The closest regional airport is a two-hour drive, and
international airports are at least six hours away. Today’s journey was
going to require 12 hours, three airplanes and plenty of patience.
But I knew it would be well worth the effort.
