“Why are you giving me this?” Maeve glanced at the pendant, looked back at Aki ambling to the trees.

He looked over his shoulder, “Protection” he clarified, vanishing in the pine trees.

His footsteps faded, leaving Maeve alone with the birds singing and the chirps if the insects. She sighed, laying on the cool stone, holding up the gemstone pendant. Its shape was like a teardrop, lines of cloudy lapis and baby blue circled the inside, shards of black breaking the pattern. Scratch marks covered the once smooth surface, the string unraveling at the ends with small-carved wooden beads. It felt almost warming, safe and comfortable.

Why did she need protection from a gemstone? She wasn’t going to deal of more beings like him is she?

Maeve shook her head, dragging herself up from the stone and strolling down the narrow path. Her mind drained form the interaction with Aki, her stomach buzzing. She didn’t figure out where Aki is from, but he did live near in the forest. Since he isn’t from Earth, how did he get here? Maeve rubbed her eyes, groaning as she shuffled home.

Man, she needed a nap.
