TAPPING INTO THE FUTURE
Crippled by anxiety and health concerns, 19 year-old Alyssa Hurter never thought
she would graduate high school, but now the Class of 2014 graduate has plans
of attending college. In fact, Hurter is the first New Horizons graduate to attend
a Division I school. She will attend the Trial Admissions Program (TAP) at Mizzou,
which begins on May 29. Only 50 students are accepted into TAP at the university.
She must receive a C or better in English and Math to continue her education at
Mizzou. “I know I can do it. I have my mind set on it and I’m going to do it,” Hurter
said. Once successful in TAP, Hurter will begin her classes in the fall.
She said New Horizons High School (NHHS) taught her she could
get back on track. Prior to acceptance at NHHS,
she was close to giving up hope. “I thought
I was going to be flipping burgers the rest of
my life, but I knew I had potential.” Hurter
believes NHHS was a turning point in her life.
“That was just a point in my life. It wasn’t the
stopping point.”
Hurter plans to become a speech pathologist,
which will require a Bachelor’s degree and a
Master’s degree.
“This is just
the beginning.”
