What does miniature golf, baseball, pizza, a city created out of
recyclables and building your dream house have in common? These
topics were platforms to learning math during the R-III District’s Summer
Math Academy in 2014. The district took a hiatus from providing the
opportunity summer enrichment due to budget constraints and
uncertainties at the state level.
District officials spent much of the 2013-14 school year planning a
cost-neutral program focused on math for residents of the R-III District.
This meant the summer programming extended beyond those students
enrolled. Students living in the district's boundaries, but receiving an
education elsewhere could attend the math program. Nearly 2,500
students signed up for the hands-on math program. According to
parent Samantha Moore (via the district’s Facebook page), her fourth
grade student liked only going a half-day, having no homework and not
bringing a backpack.
The district also designed the four week program to consist of only
four days a week, too, in hopes of increasing interest in the summer
program. Assistant Superintendent Todd Culbertson believes this
design encouraged enrollment and allowed families to have extended
weekends.
