STEPHEN SPENCER + ASSOCIATES
Designing experiences that work harder
Stephen Spencer + Associates are The Ambience Architects, helping museums, heritage destinations, visitor attractions and cultural organisations create experiences that are more purposeful, people-centric and commercially successful.
At the heart of the consultancy’ s work is a simple belief: visitor experience should never be treated as decoration. When organisations thoughtfully design how people feel, move, connect and spend, stronger commercial performance often follows naturally.
Founded by Stephen Spencer, whose career spans more than 30 years across retail, tourism, heritage and cultural organisations, the consultancy brings together an experienced collective of Associates specialising in areas including retail strategy, operations, storytelling, | sustainability, customer experience, commercial development and spatial design. What makes the team distinctive is that its members have all held operational responsibility themselves, running attractions, retail environments and visitor-facing businesses in the real world.
The consultancy’ s approach is built around its concept of Ambience- understanding how people actually experience a place through all the senses, and how that influences behaviour, engagement and spend. This philosophy underpins everything from strategic planning and visitor journey design to retail development and operational reviews.
Recent projects include retail strategy and implementation for SEVEN in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, concept development and retail curation for the Inverness Castle Experience in Scotland, and sustainability-led retail and catering strategies for Glasgow’ s People’ s Palace. Across these projects, the focus has remained consistent: helping organisations connect story, space and commercial performance in ways that feel authentic to both place and audience.
At the Inverness Castle Experience, for example, the retail offer was designed as an extension of the wider visitor journey rather than a standalone shop. Products were sourced from Highland makers wherever possible, with storytelling woven throughout the experience.
