Book of Kells, Trinity College Dublin © Event Book of Kells, Trinity College Dublin © Event world where their imagination connects them deeply to the stories of the past.
The studio’ s quest for authenticity took the team across Ireland, collaborating with leading experts to recreate forgotten sounds and textures. They recorded the exhibition’ s soundtrack on the world’ s only replica of Ireland’ s oldest harp and meticulously captured the echoes of the Old Library to recreate its exact timbre. They tracked how sunlight dances across leather-bound books and individually photographed hundreds of volumes, capturing a wealth of authentic detail for moments that last mere seconds in the final experience, but which ground the immersive experience in reality, adding nuance and gravitas to the spectacle.
In the pavilion, playful interpretation of some of Trinity’ s prized pieces provides opportunities for immersive interaction and experiential storytelling. Visitors can follow the book on its extraordinary journey from Iona in Scotland in 800AD, over the Irish Sea to Kells, and onwards to contemporary Dublin, as 1,200 years of history and stories unfold before their eyes. Pared back, versatile CGI imagery shows the book’ s physical journey in a visceral and emotive abstract experience- a meditative and
contemplative moment that allows visitors to bathe in the significance and hidden history of the Book of Kells, as well as appreciating its intrinsic beauty. Visitors travel to 1916 to hear the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, witness the architectural evolution of the Long Room from 1732 to the modern day and interact with spirited sculptures including Ada Lovelace, Jonathan Swift, Rosalind Franklin and William Shakespeare, as projection-mapped busts come to life, talking in the first person and directly addressing them.
Originally envisioned as a 3-year experience, it has been hugely successful with visitors and extended to a 5-year opening, shortlisted for the Museum + Heritage Awards Best Use of Digital International category, and nominated for‘ Europe’ s Leading Tourist Attraction’ in the World Travel Awards.
