Welcome
Trust in the
future
Building Platforms of Trust was the theme of UFI’s recent
Global Congress in Bangkok and what an inspirational few
days it was.
International conductor and musical revolutionary
Charles Hazlewood (inspiration for this issue’s cover) spoke
about his work in founding the world’s first paraorchestra.
He certainly hit a high note, but admitted that bringing the
best out of your team was a demand task: “You trust your
gestures communicate what is useful to the orchestra”.
For anyone building a team or, indeed, an events
business, the lessons were many and fitting for the future
where, it is clear, venues and organisers will need to
work much more closely, sharing risk and reward and
overlapping their roles and efforts for mutual success.
UFI showed a good lead in Bangkok and its Global
Alliance with ICCA and AIPC is a further sign of how to
work together in future to make events music magic.
Two big trends emerged from UFI’s discussions and
were powerfully articulated in new President Mary
Larkin’s speech to Congress. She urged UFI and the broader
industry to embrace sustainability and accelerate efforts to
conserve and protect our precious resources. She made an
impassioned call to promote diversity in the industry and
hoped to be a trailblazer for encouraging more women to
break through to the top in their organisations.
UFI is set to walk the walk on the initiatives with a
Sustainability Forum planned in Paris in May. I encourage
you to attend.
One other area I trust will be bigger in 2020 is event
technology and, in particular its ability to let us get much
more out of our data and to provide ever more bespoke
services for exhibitors and tradeshow visitors.
This issue contains many views on our global markets
from experts in the exhibition field. I hope you find much
sustainable food for thought for the New Year and beyond.
I wish all your businesses success in 2020 and look forward
to hearing all about them and to you putting your trust in
EW and each other to share best practice far and wide.
