The road back

would be doing you a great disservice to suggest that things

I are back to normal . For one , no one really knows what ‘ normal ’ is anymore . Yet , the road back was always going to be a long one , but we had to start somewhere , and I ’ m delighted to report that the final third of 2021 is looking far rosier than it was two months ago . Everything , though , must be viewed in context . In this issue we speak to several organisers about the shows they are running between September and the end of the year , and it stands to reason that the confidence will filter through the various marketplaces and help get buyers and sellers back together in a face-to-face environment .

Of course , the dark art of mergers and acquisitions makes for interesting reading , as Steve Monnington observes on p8 . He notes that a trend of global strategic tie-ups is emerging , with some big activity taking place in the East .
On the organiser front , Simon Parker speaks to Diversified ’ s Carsten Holm on co-locating three shows to bring the community together under one roof , p22 , and we hear from Montgomery on p10 .
Matthew Butler takes time to tell us about the extensive range of shows CloserStill are putting on before the end of the year , p45 , and we talk to Broadway Events ’ Emma Barrett , organiser of The Childcare & Education Expo , which returns this month , p36 .
There ’ s another show taking place this month which you may be interested in attending yourself : International Confex . That ’ s right , a show designed just for you returns early doors on 1-2 September at ExCeL London , and the whole team here at
EN can ’ t wait to see you in person , so get yourself registered .
As closing words , I ’ d like to pay a special note of thanks to Simon Parker , who has now completed his four-month run as guest editor of this magazine . Simon has done an incredible job and I ’ m sure you will all join me in wishing him good luck in his next adventure . That , of course , leads me to confirm that Phil Soar , chairman of CloserStill , among many roles , will be picking up the torch . I am in no doubt that he will give you all much to think about .
See you at Confex , it may even be normal .
