LAST WORD

Events are hectic , stressful places . The swarms of people , the swathes of exhibitors , the jam-packed conference agenda – it ’ s no wonder that event coordinator was ranked the world ’ s fifth most stressful job .

Events are allencompassing , and all of us that work within the industry , we love it ( how could you not , when working 17-hour days ) But it can still take its toll . With the passion comes the pressure , constantly being switched on when organising and attending events which can often leave us in the ‘ fight or flight mode ’ otherwise known as , the stress response . And we all know too well flight is not an option in our industry , whatever curve balls get thrown our way , we must meet them head on and find a remedy … and fast .
In this fast-paced world , companies are prioritising the wellbeing of their teams , and are promoting and supporting programmes in the workplace ( this is great to see ) But , what about the event organisers and exhibitors ? As event organisers , the focus is shifting to provide not only valuable experiences , but an uplifting environment that positively contributes towards attendee wellbeing . What about those leading the event and taking on the main stresses and strains to make it happen ?
We know that positive mental health and wellbeing enables you to function well , have meaningful social connections , positive self- esteem and be better able to cope with life ’ s ups and downs . All of these things are integral to the role we play in events , and therefore some time out to focus on our wellbeing should be part of the event plan . A lack of downtime is likely to lead to increased stress levels , lower productivity and as a result , wellbeing can suffer . A focus on general health and wellbeing is good for everyone involved in the events space .
So what can we do ? Break with tradition and incorporate wellbeing activities and wellness hubs for event organiser and exhibitors as much as for the attendees . Breakout areas and production

Wellbeing in the workplace and onsite

Founder of Be In You Element Lucy Eden says some down time for organisers ’ wellbeing should be part of every event plan offices are nothing new , but how many events include spaces focused on mental relaxation ?
Reception drinks are the norm for unwinding after a build or event , but how productive are you the following day ? Don ’ t get me wrong we have all earnt that drink , but the following day the body needs time to heal , rehydrate and recover . How about we incorporate as part of the norm , event activities in which we are invigorated , nourished and productive .
With an increasing number of companies embracing wellness to keep their staff healthy and happy , and with an increase in events happening worldwide , now is the time to start thinking about how we can implement wellbeing strategies into our event planning , and ensure that everyone is getting their mental health and wellbeing prioritised .
