Exhibition News Magazine
Going strong
Hello and welcome to the February issue of Exhibition
News . As I sit here typing , the winter sun is shining and there are murmurs in the press that we could be out of Plan B restrictions by the time you are reading this ... which is absolutely definitely not any kind of deflection tactic from the latest scandal ( whatever that is by the time of press ). Believe it when you see it .
We have dedicated this issue to independent organisers , those smaller companies who are not backed by Private Equity or part of a larger mix of businesses .
Our cover story this month ( p10 ) explores the extraordinary story of FutureScape , which during the pandemic bucked the trend and actually found themselves growing the brand , I won ’ t give away any spoilers , but it makes for a fascinating read .
Elsewhere , we talk to Gaby Mendez ( p18 ), a fledgling organiser with a unique idea and stop for a water break at the Raccoon offices to chat more about the National Running Show ( p21 ).
We also speak to Broadway Events ’ Emma Barrett and Kara Neill about the education-sector ’ s shows ( p25 ) and proffer a quick review of Hire Space ’ s EventLAB , which took place before Christmas ( p29 ).
Guest editor Phil Soar ’ s contribution this month will no doubt bring a smile to your face ( p33 ). Titled “ What we say and what we mean ”, its primary objective is to draw attention to the ‘ Newspeak ’ we often encounter in the industry , where words and sentences are arranged to the point of absurdity . Perhaps by accident it also reminds us that this Orwellian ‘ Newspeak ’ is currently being adopted by our current government .
How else do you say you were running an event without saying you did so , while the actual events industry remained locked up and prohibited from earning revenue ?
Anyway , let ’ s not dwell on that , let ’ s celebrate the independent organisers who are still going strong .
Enjoy the issue .
