For Heart Rate , Know the Math
Here ’ s what different heart rate measures mean and how to calculate yours .
Maximum Heart Rate ( MHR )
Resting Heart Rate ( RHR )
Heart Rate Reserve ( HRR )
Target Heart Rate
What is it ?
Highest number of beats per minute your heart can reach during exercise
Number of times your heart beats each minute when not exercising
Difference between maximum heart rate and resting heart rate
Your desired exercise intensity , represented by a specific heart rate
How do I calculate or measure it ?
Quick Estimation 220 - age
OR
More Accurate 206.9 - ( 0.67 x age )
Measure with a heart rate monitor , such as a smartwatch or exercise equipment , if available
Maximum heart rate ( MHR ) – resting heart rate ( RHR )
[ Heart rate reserve ( HRR ) x desired exercise intensity *] + resting heart rate ( RHR )
What if I ’ m taking a blood pressure medication that lowers heart rate ( a beta blocker )?
These medications limit how high your heart rate can go with exercise ( this is called heart rate blunting )
May remain the same as before medication or decrease slightly
As with MHR , heart rate reserve will be lower with these medications
Your target heart rate will be lower , but you can still aim to achieve a beneficial target range ( e . g ., 60 to 85 % of MHR )
Use this formula for MHR : 164 - ( 0.7 x age )
