Te Pae Convention Centre a
‘catalyst’ for regeneration
After the devastating Christchurch
earthquake in 2011, the city is
experiencing a revitalisation with new
and refurbished venues, hotels and
event spaces popping up across the city.
Set to open in October 2020, the Te Pae
Convention Centre will sit on the banks
of the Avon River as the centrepiece of
the city’s entertainment precinct.
According to Ross Steele, the
centre’s General Manager, Te Pae
is a catalyst for Christchurch’s
redevelopment. “For a historic city
such as Christchurch, it is a rare
opportunity for a convention centre
to be the focal point of a city’s urban
redevelopment,” said Ross.
Ross says the venue will not only
boost the number of events coming to
Christchurch, but also add significant
social and cultural value.
“The economic impact of a
venue like this in a city can’t be
underestimated,” Mr Steele said. “But
there’s a huge social impact as well.
For example, the events it will bring to
the city by bringing world leaders and
establishing a knowledge exchange.” S
