Guest Speaker – Blaze Aid - Dennis

Started and commenced with a detailed slide show and then spoke on Black Saturday. Kilmore residents, the Butler's, were the first impacted and without the assistance and the repairs to some 500kms of perimeter fences etc would have taken a lot longer. This was not just the Butler's. Perimeter fencing was selected so as to not impinge of commercial fencing companies. The message then came through and Blaze Aid was born. The need for volunteers was made easy by the ABC radio station. A brake in 2010 and 2011 was cyclone Yazi. 2012 floods in Charlton and Bridgewater. 2013 there were 14 fire events to cope with. After a fight the ATO, now recognized as a charity. 2017 cyclone Debbie. More fires etc. Volunteers come from all over Australia and overseas as well. Fences are the last thing to be insured. Some farmers are unable to afford the cost of materials. Funds have been allocated by a voucher system. Have corporate as well as mum's and dad's. Local Shire Councils are asked to help out with facilities. A number of trailers were purpose built to specification. Saturday night parties are held and the local farmers are invited to assist them with general friendship as some are doing it very hard and depression runs deep. Drought assistance in Richmond Qld performed as well. Past and present Governor Generals have attended some work sites. Finally, there is always a need for volunteers. No experience necessary. Very active website. Visits total over 2m. Cobden area in Victoria currently a WIP. Children generally not welcomed.
