T wo destinations , one the biggest exhibition industry market in Europe – Germany – and one dynamic Asian market – Macao – which has been called the ‘ Las Vegas of
Asia ’, are squarely in our focus in this issue . Mike Fletcher examines what key German messen are doing and hears from some of the key actors on the German exhibition stage . While Theo Reilly surveys the trade fair scene in Macao in a major feature starting on page 61 . We can clearly learn much from markets old and new .
And many of you may be reading this in Germany , as Cologne is this year ’ s host of our global association of the exhibition industry , UFI ’ s Global Congress . A fitting host destination for discussing the strengths and challenges of our vibrant industry which provides an enduring marketplace for goods and services of all kinds .
Dr Baris Onay , pages 48-49 , a lso reviews a fascinating report on industry consolidation delivered at UFI ’ s European Conference in Zurich recently . He talks about an “ incredible pace of change ” as top 10 organisers now represent 29 % of the industry , up from 16 % in 2012 .
Carrying on the theme of reviews and Stephanie Selesnick leafs through a fourth book from CTA president Shapiro , pages 18-19 . And there is much to mull over on the M & A side with Steve Monnington and his regular column on page 13 .
Despite the wonders of technology , self-registration is a ‘ no-no ’ according to three of the experts interviewed on the topic by Theo Reilly on pages 12-13 . Event tech , of course , can be a great time and money-saver as our article from Doug Baird on page 51 underlines .
