American Apparel is a rapidly growing clothing manufacturer distributor and retailer that became popular for selling basic, solid color cotton wear. The company was founded in 1989 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada by Min Chan and Eustace Russell. Now, with more than 270 stores worldwide, the companies clothing seems to be getting more provocative. It seems as if the more popular this retailer gets, the more controversial their fashion becomes. The companies mission statement stated “We are committed to leveraging art, design, and technology to produce garments of the highest quality, while pioneering industry standards of social responsibility in the workplace” but is that what’s really being done? American Apparel has been setting unrealistic standards and objectifying women through it’s companies overly sexualized clothing and advertisements.
