It’ s February. I’ m sure, like me, many of you are wondering what’ s happened to your New Year’ s resolutions. If you even bothered to make any. By now, the gym has been deserted and we’ re stuck paying that subscription that we tell ourselves, we will use. If for no other reason, than to convince ourselves that we didn’ t spend waste the money.
Or maybe you vowed that 2017 is the year that you get organised. And now you stuck with a planner that hasn’ t been used since the first week in January. Not to mention the pile of things that should be on a to do list because you actually don’ t have the brain capacity to remember everything, and now you stuck at 3 AM wondering when you’ re going to do everything you’ re supposed to do.
Here’ s a secret. January is the worst time to make resolutions. Most of the time you’ re making them while you’ re relaxed, on holiday and surrounded by family. For better or worse, that is not the best time to think about improving your life.
The way I see it, it’ s probably best to wait for everyone to get back to work and school and see how schedules pan out. Work around your current life. Some things cannot change. We have jobs with deadlines and cranky bosses. Kids with school and extra-mural activities. These things are important. Making a living is important. Spending time with your family even more so. But taking care of yourself is your single biggest responsibility.
It may mean you need to take the toddler to the play area at the gym at six in the morning. They may not be happy, but they won’ t die. More importantly, they see mommy taking time to look after herself. Doing something that is purely for her benefit. This is not a bad lesson for them to learn. And just think, the early rise might make naptime or bedtime so much easier.
Another secret? You’ re allowed to fall off the wagon. You are trying to change your lifestyle. You are learning a new skill. The goal is improvement not perfection. So, like last year, you went
