The Electric sweeper (James Spangler):
In the late 19th century, dust was a big problem for people because it was everywhere. The streets were dirt streets so people’s shoes brought a lot of this dirt into department stores. . James Spangler, who was a night janitor to a department store, had asthma and the rugs were very dusty what made him sit from 10 to 15 minutes
on the ground coughing and trying not to cough blood. The carpet sweeper and its primitive brush on wheels mechanism made it worse especially for someone who has bad lungs. Spangler dreamed of being a world famous inventor, so he wanted to develop something new. Something that could reduce the storm of dust around him while sweeping the carpets. As Spangler was working in a night shift, he had enough time to think. One night he got an idea. The ceiling fan was powered by a small motor, so he thought what if the motor could power the carpet sweeper and make pushing and pulling much easier. So He unscrewed the fan blades and then he placed the motor in the sweeper.
