Why is the Ocean Blue?
the Sceince behind the ocean color
It was always believed that the color of the sea water or the ocean water is blue at the middle of the day and black at the night due to its reflection to the sky color. So, when it
is day, the sky is blue, and consequently the water is blue. And, when it is night, the sky is black and so is the color of the ocean water. Well, this is a great MISCONCEPTION.
In real, the color of the ocean water lies far beyond light reflection. The ocean is blue because of the way it absorbs sunlight. The sun ray which comes from the sun directed to the earth carries all stages of visible light, starting from the red, least frequent, to the ultraviolet, most frequent. When the sun ray hits the ocean, the water strongly absorbs long-wavelength colors at the red end of the light spectrum, as well as short-wavelength
light, including violet and ultraviolet. The remaining light that we see is mostly made up
of blue wavelengths. With all molecules of water doing the same process, the ocean turns out to be a blue sheet.
The world’s oceans contain enough water to fill a cube with edges over 1000 kilometres (621 miles) in length.
Ocean tides are caused by the Earth rotating while the Moon and Sun’s gravitational pull acts on ocean water.
