“Jordan” Pencil Study
For the past 25 years internationally acclaimed artist Mary Whyte has derived much of her
inspiration from the African-Americans of the Lowcountry, many of whom can trace back
their Gullah heritage on Johns and Wadmalaw Islands for decades.
Whyte’s pencil study and finished watercolor called “Jordan”, created specifically for the
20th Anniversary Legacy Gala, depicts Ralph, a long time resident of Johns Island, as he
launches his boat across the waterway. The painting’s title refers to the Jordan River as told
in the Bible, and of crossing it to a place of sanctuary and refuge. Shown in the painting’s
mid distance is a modern power boat, representing the area’s burgeoning population and
fragile ecosystems. And in the far distance is the unspoiled beauty of Kiawah Island, our
own Jordan, to be conserved and revered for generations to come.
