Naturally Kiawah Pathways
Self-Guided Tours
Did you know that horseshoe crabs are unable to eat unless they are walking?
Or that a multi-day battle was fought during the Civil War near Kiawah Island’s
roundabout entrance? If you didn’t, here’s your chance to learn more. The
Kiawah Conservancy has developed a series of self-guided biking and walking
tours to help Islanders and visitors alike experience Kiawah’s natural beauty
and learn about its rich history.
The program, titled Naturally Kiawah Pathways, presently includes seven
tours. The application that guides the tours, TravelStorysGPS, is free and can
easily be downloaded to any phone or mobile device. Four of the tours are
geographically based (western, central, and eastern Kiawah Island and
the Preserve), and three are focused on wildlife (Treasures of the Beach;
Kiawah’s Ponds: A Wildlife Wonderland; and Capturing the Beauty of Kiawah).
Each includes 10-12 locations where something special about Kiawah is
revealed. When you arrive at a location, a GPS-activated commentary will
automatically start, or you can activate an icon about a particular subject (for
example, our friend the horseshoe crab). Each tour can be completed in 60-
90 minutes or undertaken in smaller portions.
