Maritime Forest Reserve and Nature Trail
It has long been reported that at some point in Kiawah’s history, pirates
inhabited her environs in search of treasure. No chests of gold were to be
found, but Kiawah’s true treasure did surface, and her natural wonders
continue to lure human and animal inhabitants to delight in the discovery.
Much of Kiawah’s appeal comes from the lush canopies of the maritime
forests, which blanket the Island, acting as a barrier between the mainland
and the sea. The plant life within this habitat has adapted to withstand sandy
soil, high tides, and brisk winds. Kiawah’s maritime forests are also home to
a variety of animal species. The Kiawah Conservancy is working to preserve
this fragile environment and has recently updated its Maritime Forest Reserve
and Nature Trail located at 133 Conifer Lane to educate visitors and residents
about the importance of the maritime forest to Kiawah’s habitat.
Why are maritime forests so important? Maritime forests provide a protective
buffer between the mainland and the sea. In addition to island stabilization,
these coastal forests also perform other environmental functions such as
supporting wildlife habitat, soil production, and nutrient conservation. Maritime
forests create a natural cooling effect through their shade and act as a buffer
against noise. The plant life within the maritime forest habitat is especially
tolerant of the rough salt spray, sun, and wind conditions that exist on barrier
islands. Bobcats, foxes, deer, rabbits, and raccoons are some of the many
animals which use the forest as a sheltered resting place and source of food.
The Maritime Forest Reserve and Nature Trail provides a unique outdoor
learning experience. The wide variety of native plants found along the trail are
not only beautiful but are well suited to Kiawah’s growing conditions and help
sustain habitat on Kiawah Island.
This open-air classroom, located in the heart of Kiawah Island, features more
than 30 plant species. With the addition of new informative signs placed along
the route, visitors to the trail learn about unique detail, special adaptations,
and each plant’s significance to wildlife habitat.
Visit the Maritime Forest Reserve and Nature Trail today and enjoy learning
about all the wonders that Kiawah’s maritime forests have to offer.
