WE DON ' T NEED NO EDUCATION
I first started teaching 15 years ago in the United Kingdom- during that time I always struggled to answer the question ' Why did you become a teacher?' I would often mention the holidays … not a truly satisfactory answer. Well, I can now finally answer the question after spending a year outside of the UK teaching in Kazakhstan.
Although the song was written over 30 years ago- it highlights today an attitude that is prevalent with young people in the UK and other developed countries. The education establishment have created a generation of young people who failed to benefit from their time in school. Figures published by the Department of Education in the UK show the extend of the issue.
Being a teacher is one of the most rewarding occupations that you could have. You don ' t get the chance in many jobs to discuss ideas, challenge misconceptions and to try and inspire young minds. With all of the problems in the world- the classroom is an extremely important place in which tolerance, respect and understanding needs to be completely understood by the next eneration.
Education is never static it is always changing and evolving. As an international teacher with experiences of different educational systems I am a great believer in sharing good practice and strategies with my colleagues. The old expression of ' don ' t reinvent the wheel ' should always be promoted amongst educators.
It is for this reason that I was persuaded to share my thoughts on education.
The title of this article would hopefully get your attention- some might think that it ' s a strange title. Well before discussing it further and to avoid the accusation of plagiarism, The title is taken from song written in 1979 by Pink Floyd. The song continues: We don`t need no education, we don`t need no thought control, no dark sarcasms in the classrooms.
In 2014, 954,000 people aged 16-24 were regarded as NEET ' s( Not in Education, Employment and Training) 13.1 % of people in this age group, to put these figures into context the OECD average is 16.1 %
Policy makers and Governments will no doubt be planning on various strategies to address these issues. But for those young people already failed by the education system then the future looks bleak.
In any case there are lessons to be learnt and mistakes should certainly not be repeated. Without getting involved with the dogma of politics and various failed policies.
Teachers need to be empowered and given the opportunity to be flexible with the curriculum. Teachers are at their best when they are given the freedom and opportunity to be creative. Testing and assessment is important but should not be the only measure of quality. A rigid and balanced curriculum should be developed to spark the interest of young people. The curriculum should not be designed to act as a stranglehold to prevent creativity and imagination. Failure to change will result in students becoming disinterested and disaffected with education- The next generation of NEET ' s with the song playing in the background ' We Don ' t Need No Education '
