ZEYTINLI ISLAND
Zeytinli Island is a tiny island. It is the symbol of Erdek and it can be seen from
every corner of the town. The name of the island is thought to be given due to the
two olive trees on the island because Zeytin means ‘’olives’’ in Turkish.
There are ruins of an old church on the island. It is the Virgin Mary Church. It was
astimated to be built in 500 AD. On the island there is one Virgin Mary church,
Eastern Church, a Monestry, two Ayazmas (holly spring water) ,two baths, an
underground churche, a small boat yard and the largest baptism pool. The pool
was built for pilgrimage in the name of Mary. It was carved out of a white marble
stone. The spring water is believed to have healing power. Evliya Çelebi, who was a
famous old turkish globetrather, in his records mentions about the spring water. He
says it heals diseases related to eye health.
