Reflective practice is a major aspect of VbE, and many schools have found creative ways to introduce this to children of all ages. This too is an aspect of mindfulness practice and the earlier children are introduced to the techniques the simpler it is to incorporate it in to their everyday life, just as they have learnt to clean their teeth, they can learn how to brush their brains. You too can learn alongside children you may be teaching, or maybe quietly at home. Start with the simple idea of experiencing your breath, really notice what it’s like for you to breathe in and out, feel the movement of your body, and each time you realise something has distracted you from your breath, then kindly refocus your attention on your breathing. Maybe start with counting ten breaths, and gradually build up to longer times, one minute, three minutes, five minutes, use a timer to support your practice.
