Letters to Editor

I read your feature last month on euthanasia. I also know that this matter has been developing over the years, and has been discussed multiple times by Members of Parliament in the House of Commons. As a concerned citizen, I would like to state that euthanasia is completely unethical – it undermines the sanctity of life. It will have a horrible effect on Canadian society. If politicians want to maintain a moral standard, they cannot legalize euthanasia. We trust them to represent our views, and here is mine.

When I found out that your issue this month will focus on ethics in politics, I thought I would write to you. I personally think that there is no such thing. Politicians crave power, and they will stop at nothing to have it. Now, let us consider the good politicians. Some of the toughest decisions, maybe even the unethical ones, have to be made to benefit the country. My question: do ethics really matter in politics? If someone takes a stance or makes a decision selflessly, solely for the greater good of the country, does that excuse it being potentially unethical? Personally, as long as the population benefits from the politician and his/her actions, ethics should not play a significant role in politics.
