The minor crisis at Audi forecast a slight possibility that Porsche could achieve the unthinkable (as even they would attest)… Winning on returning from a fifteen year hiatus.
The #20 Porsche’s 919 Hybrid took the lead as Audi’s crew beavered away on Kristensen’s car. However Andre Lotterer had other ideas. As Timo Bernhard handed over to Mark Webber for the run to the flag, Lotterer pounced with two hours remaining.
Still, a podium would’ve been a beautiful consolation prize for Porsche. It’s too bad then that La Sarthe doesn’t divvy out on sentiment alone. Alas a broken engine ended Webber’s chances of resisting Lotterer’s advances – although a slim prospect at best considering the late race pace of the Audi.
