The Arena UK BEF
Futurity

Dougal
Jillys Jubilee
Futurity. Jack Cochrane handled
Jilly’s Jubilee.
Penny Walster of Bathleyhills
Farm, Newark, exhibited a total
of 8 sports ponies here, she said,
“I cannot thank all our helpers
enough, everyone pulled
together and it went brilliantly”.
Penny breeds ponies for dressage
and her colt foal, Bathleyhills
Dougal received an elite premium
of 9.00 at Arena UK.
Bathleyhills Dougal is by Penny’s
four-year-old home-bred
stallion, Bathleyhills Monet,
who sired five of the ponies
entered at Arena UK. Penny
said, “Monet is producing very
consistent progeny in what is
only his second season as a
stallion. Dougal is out of a SPSS
graded mare, Rohey Sparkling
Maydream, she is also the dam
of Bathleyhills Chocolate Dream
who went to the Horse Of The
Year Show last year”. Dougal is
for sale, but Penny will keep him
and produce him for dressage
until a suitable buyer is found.
Bathleyhills Jeremy, another
colt foal by Bathleyhills Monet
and Bathleyhills Sylvia by Caesar
171 both scored higher first
premiums at Arena UK. Penny
said, “The ponies have all been
fantastic, they have al l been
scoring consistently well over
the years. We are delighted with
any pony that gets more than
a first premium”. Bathleyhills
Monet is also being produced for
the equine bridge. A higher first
premium indicates that the horse
has the potential and outlook to
perform at national level.
Charmion de Luxe
scored 9.03 in the dressage
section. Charmion de Luxe is out
of her mare, Hilkens My Love, Jo
said, “She is a young mare and
this is her second foal. We will
keep her as a broodmare as she
has such lovely foals. Charmion
de Luxe will be aimed as a
dressage pony in the future,
we breed dressage ponies and
small horses”. Jo also scored
higher first premiums with her
yearling, RS Starsky (8.89) and
three-year-old, RS Socrates (8.61).
Jo went on to say, “Socrates is
98
our home-bred sire of Starsky.
I brought Socrates back to the
Futurity so he is eligible for the
equine bridge now”.
Jilly’s Jubilee, a yearling filly by
the stallion Up with the Lark, out
of Forever Jilly a Cleveland bay
mare by Storth House Temptation
took an elite score of 9.01 in
the eventing section. Owned
and bred by Anna Sykes, Jilly’s
Jubilee was on the waiting list for
Arena UK and her entry was only
confirmed the day before the
Anne Brown of the Gadebrook
Stud in Oundle bred threeyear-old colt, Kaalif, the highest
scoring endurance horse at Arena
UK. He received a higher first
premium of 8.50. Kaalif was the
highest scoring two-year-old in
endurance at the Futurity in 2012
and he has the highest score
awarded to a three-year-old so
far this year. Anne said, “Kaalif’s
breeding is unusual as his dam,
Palma Benay was imported
from Australia. He is by Silver
Zaanif which makes him a pure
bred Crabbet Arabian”. Kaalif
recently paraded at the World
Crabbet Convention at Addington
on the 20th July.
Anne went on to say, “Kaalif
has been backed this summer
by Davina Godwin from Birch
Spring Training in Doddington.
He will start his endurance
riding career next season
and he will also go for stallion
licensing. Kaalif has a lovely
temperament and a very low
heart rate which is crucial for
endurance horses”.

Julie Moxon’s
Furzley Magician
in 2011
Piper(to his friends) Furzley
Magician by Applewitch Pure
Magic out of Foxhill Harmony,
came to me as a New Forest
stallion and I was his last hope,
he had so many problems but
I fell in love with him anyway
and was determined to try my
best with him.
We gelded him and the work
began, we bonded straight
away and the partnership grew
stronger and stronger. This pony
has the perfect temperament
and has given me so much love
and trust to say how he came
to me, he has rewarded me in
more ways than I could have
asked for and is showing what
a super star he is with many
wins and championships over
the last few years including the
Breed Show Gelding Champion
out of Over 70 ponies, and
Supreme at the Northern New
Forest Show, then at Ponies UK
Summer Championships 2013
to take the Breed Championship
judged by Miss G Wright and
then Daily Mail In hand M & M
Supreme Champion judged
by Mr J Careless against all the
champions of the other native
breeds has made me even
prouder of this very, very special
pony.
I love the New Forest breed and
have been showing them for
nearly 20 years. He also did the
concours d’elegance for the first
time and was a super star!
