Three elite premiums were
awarded to young horses
bred in Yorkshire at the recent
Baileys Horse Feeds/ British
Breeding/British Equestrian
Federation (BEF) Futurity held
on the 30th July at Myerscough
College. Several other horses
also gained higher first
premiums at the event.
The BEF Futurity Evaluation series
aims to identify British bred
young potential sport horses
and ponies destined for careers
in dressage, eventing, showjumping or endurance, and may
even find the Olympic Champions
of the future.
Two potential showjumping foals
were awarded elite premiums for
Sue Jagger of the Millfield Stud in
Settle. Filly foal, Millfield Pandora
received the highest score of the
day at Myerscough (9.42) and
colt foal, Millfield Safari earned an
elite premium (9.12). Filly foal,
MSJ Sensation, owned and bred
by Emma Blundell of Mount St
John Equestrian in Thirsk, earned
herself an elite premium of 9.03
in the dressage section. An Elite
premium indicates that the horse
has the potential and outlook to
perform at international level.
Filly foal, Millfield Pandora is
by Plot Blue, out of a Caretino
mare, Pretty Woman. Sue said,
“Pandora is the fourth foal from
Pretty Woman that has been
awarded an elite premium”. The
Futurity evaluators said “Millfield
Pandora’s canter has a huge
step and great cadence and she
uses her body through all gaits
and transitions”. She is now for
sale.
Millfield Safari is by Sandro Boy,
out of a mare called Millfield
Cassandra, by Baloubet du Rouet.
Sue went on to say, “Pretty
Woman is the dam of both
Cassandra and Pandora, we
are thrilled with this dam line.
Safari has now been sold to
showjumper, Simon Buckley”.
stallion Millfield Cascade and
scored a higher first mark of
8.86”.
Lee said, “I bred Salto de Altura
from my broodmare, Goshka
Balou-lou. She was bred to
be a coloured horse improver
and has always been used as a
broodmare. I bought her from
Paul Marshall. I have sold a
part share in Salto de Altura to
Robert and Kelly Benyon, they
will produce her and jump her.
I breed around three horses a
year, it is a hobby but I breed
as high a quality as I can. I
had never been to the Futurity,
but after I had put my mare to
Millfield Cascade, Sue was keen
to take the youngster. They
did a brilliant job, her score is
fantastic and I am very happy”.
Lee went on to say, “I found the
comments from the Futurity
evaluators really fair, they said
the sort of things that would help
you improve”.
Filly foal, MSJ Sensation received
the highest score of the day
awarded to a potential dressage
horse at Myerscough (9.03) and
an elite premium for Emma
Blundell of Mount St John
Equestrian. Emma said, “I am
very happy with Sensation’s
score, she is very elegant. She
is the first embryo transfer foal
from my mare, Keystone Diaz
with whom I have had numerous
wins at Prix St Georges and
am now working toward Grand
Prix”. Sensation is by San Amour.
Emma will keep MSJ Sensation
as a competition prospect. She
aims to compete in young horse
classes and will eventually breed
from her.
Wadacre Sweet Pea received the
highest score of the day awarded
to a potential sports pony at
Myerscough (8.60) and a higher
first premium for her owner and
breeder Tom Heywood of the
Wadacre Stud in Liverpool. A
higher first premium indicates
that the horse has the potential
and outlook to perform at
national level.
Tom said, “We are really pleased
with the score Wadacre Sweet
Pea got at the Futurity. Her
mother, Marshan Tansy is a
graded sports pony. She has
been on the pony club teams
in all three disciplines and is a
lead rein pony at the moment,
she is just as good doing either.
Wadacre Sweet Pea is by our
stallion, Wadacre Super Trooper,
he is a brilliant jumper and is
currently in Germany training
for his stallion performance
test”. Wadacre Super Trooper
gained a higher first premium
in the futurity in 2010. He has
been accepted on to the Futurity
equine bridge programme.
The Harthill Stud in Cheshire were
successful with two filly foals at
Myerscough. Harthill Luisa took a
higher first premium of 8.57 in the
showjumping section and Harthill
Bally Miro was the top scoring
eventer of the day at Myerscough
with a higher first premium of
8.55. A higher first premium
indicates that the horse has the
potential and outlook to perform
at national level.
Nina Barbour of the Harthill Stud
Salto De Altura
Millfield Pandora
Sue and Brian Thompson took
a total of four mares and foals
to the Myerscough Futurity,
sue added, “We took filly foal,
Salto de Altura to the Futurity
for her owner Lee Bishop from
Doncaster, she is by our young
