Session 1— PK-5 Improving Student Learning and
Behavior with Yoga Jacki Sawn Location: Barnard Gym
In this session, teachers will explore the benefits of integrating the practice of yoga into their classroom to improve student learning and behavior. Teachers will discuss and explore how yoga can easily fit into their classroom and daily schedule, as well as investigate some of the resources that exist to support the implementation of this practice with their students. Teachers will also have the opportunity to try some poses they can introduce and use immediately in their classroom following this session.
Session 2— 3-12 How to Use Quia. com for Online Homework, Quizzes, and Games to Increase Student Engagement David Guertin Location: JFK— 13RED
This session will help teachers become familiar with quia. com to shift the responsibility of authentic learning onto the students’ shoulders. Teachers will create a game, quiz, and a homework assignment that students complete online.
Session 3— PK-5 504 Policy and Procedures for
Elementary Students Karen Gustafson & Tom Spiwak Location: Parkman— APR
In this session, staff will receive a brief history of 504 Service Plans, as well as:
Learn the difference between facts and myths.
Understand the steps to eligibility.
Participate in a 504 eligibility & service plan meeting.
Understand their role in the meetings.
Participate in case studies to give hands-on experiences.
Session 4— 3-5
Guided Reading: Next Steps Adrienne Snow & Joan Marsh Location: Parkman Library
In this session, teachers will explore updates to guided reading utilizing Jan Richardson’ s newest book, The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading.
Primary Phonemic Awareness and
Phonics Instruction Christine Turcotte-White Location: Barnard Library
Primary teachers will learn that phonemic awareness and phonics instruction are two of the essential pillars for reading instruction. In this session, you will enrich your resources with some fun, quick ways to implement these two areas into your classroom.
Session 6— K-12
Yoga for the Classroom Diana Latorre Location: EHS— E221
This session will add to educators’ classroom management skills and help them create a safer and more effective learning environment. This will be a hands-on course, where participants will work in groups to review and teach breathing, yoga, and guided imagery exercises that they can share with their students to reduce stress and anxiety and create a sense of focus. Participants will review this through floor, chair, and standing exercises. Participants will experience a yoga class( moderate level) that will start promptly at the beginning of the session. You will need to wear loose clothing, bring a yoga mat, towel / blanket, and water. Please come prepared with a notebook and writing utensil.
Session 7— K-12
Working With Transgender Youth Irwin Krieger, LCSW Location: JFK Auditorium
During this session, Irwin Krieger, LCSW will discuss how to support transgender students. He will cover material such as transgender basics and transgender steps. This session will also discuss advocacy and disclosure at school, as well as parents’ fears and concerns.
Session 8— K-12 How to Use Microsoft Word to Make
“ Class” y Materials Michelle Burlingame Location: EHS— A232
This session will help teachers learn the ins-and-outs of Microsoft Word. Topics likely to include:
How to format documents for best viewability.
Change non-digital materials to digital materials to help with differentiating content.
Inserting math and science equations and symbols easily and efficiently.
Inserting images / graphs / PDF into a Word document.
Saving documents in different formats.
Other topics depending on interest and need.
