From our School Counselor & Social Worker

Dear Guardians and Families ,
As the Parkman school counselor and social worker , we wanted to take a moment to share some exciting resources that we will be implementing within our school ' s social-emotional learning ( SEL ) curriculum . These resources , called " Zones of Regulation " and " Size of the Problem ," are designed to support your child ' s emotional regulation and problem-solving skills .
The Zones of Regulation is a framework that helps children understand and categorize their feelings into different " zones ." These zones include : The Green Zone : This zone represents a calm and focused state , where children feel happy , calm , and ready to learn . The Blue Zone : This zone represents when one is feeling sad , tired , or bored . In this zone , children might feel a need for quiet time , rest , or some gentle strategies to help them relax . The Yellow Zone : This zone represents a heightened state of alertness and excitement . Children may feel anxious , frustrated , or overwhelmed . In the Yellow Zone , we teach students proactive strategies to manage their emotions and make positive choices . The Red Zone : This zone represents an extremely heightened state of alertness and intense feelings , such as anger , rage , or extreme excitement . We teach students in the Red Zone strategies to calm down and regain control of their emotions .
By helping children identify the zone they are in , we aim to provide them with tools and strategies to manage their emotions effectively . This will enable them to make positive choices , engage in healthy problem-solving , and build healthy relationships with their peers . In addition to the Zones of Regulation , we will also be incorporating the " Size of the Problem " curriculum . This concept helps children understand that problems come in different sizes and require different responses . By teaching children to recognize the size of a problem , we can better equip them with appropriate coping mechanisms and perspective-taking skills . This understanding will empower them to navigate interpersonal con icts and daily challenges in a more thoughtful and self-regulated manner .
These resources will be integrated into our classroom discussions , activities , and ongoing curriculum . We encourage you to initiate conversations at home about emotion regulation and problem-solving skills , as this will help reinforce the concepts learned at school . For your reference , we have attached graphics of each of these resources .
If you have any questions or concerns about these resources or our SEL curriculum , please do not hesitate to reach out to us . We value your partnership as we work together to support your child ' s social-emotional development .
Please reach out to either of us with any questions or concerns . Thank you for your continued support and involvement in your child ' s education .
