Environmental Scan 2017: Human Capital Issues within the Medical Devices Sector
Figure 1-3: Process to develop a database of MedDev companies
Compilation of companies within the scope of this environmental scan
The database of companies was developed based on the following sources:
i) MDA’s list of registered manufacturers
ii) MIDA’s database of implemented projects
iii) Related industry associations’ list of members, e.g. AMMI, MARGMA
iv) Industry directories, e.g. Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM), Yellow Pages,
etc.
Relevant information such as company name, sub-sector, employment size, location, contact
person, telephone number and email address were compiled.
Cleaning of database & filling in information gaps
Once all lists of companies were merged, the database was checked and cleaned, which included
identifying the sub-sector of all companies, removal of duplicate entries and companies not
within the scope of the environmental scan, and filling in the information gaps. In addition to
secondary research, Ipsos also approached the companies through phone calls to clarify their
main business activity for sub-sector classification, to identify their employment size and to
obtain the contact details of the right target respondents for the quantitative survey.
Stratification of companies
After the database was cleaned, companies were stratified based on their sub-sector,
employment size and location of main business activity.
Survey Sampling
All companies in the database were included in the survey sampling frame except for the
following two categories:
i)
Micro-sized companies that were identified during pre-survey call (6 companies)
- In micro-sized companies (<5 employees), the employees are usually multi-tasking,
with each of them covering a few job functions. This is not reflective of the overall
human capital needs of the industry.
