Opening up an all-women barber shop
is a unique initiative , especially in a
male-dominated industry . Who or what
inspired you to take such a big step ?
My barber , Otis Anderson , Jr ., inspired
me . I went in for a haircut and walked out
with a great business idea of opening and
owning my own barber shop . Traditionally ,
men looked after men ’ s hair , and women
looked after women ’ s hair , but now more
and more people are entering nontraditional
careers — I think it ’ s excellent . I
am happy we can make an impact in the industry .
The Lady Clipper Barber Shop has helped many women feel comfortable . Was it hard to create a safe and inclusive environment for women ?
When I started the Lady Clipper , I wanted to create a space for everyone , regardless of gender . Creating a space that embodied my vision was easy because I knew the environment I wanted to create and the experience I wanted future clients to have .
How did you come up with the name “ Lady Clipper ” for your barber shop ?
My mother came up with the name during a brainstorming session , and I thought it was perfect . The name simply reflects that I ’ m a woman barber , but the logo
embodies the strength it takes to succeed in this male-dominated industry .
Do you consider what you do self-care for your clients ?
Well , according to a third of Americans , getting a haircut is a top self-care activity . People want to look and feel good . Getting a haircut can be a revitalizing experience for anyone . A fresh start . A new look . Getting a haircut is therapy , retail therapy , and self-care rolled into a much-needed pampering session .
Can you tell us about any memorable clients you have come across ?
I had a client that had a massive amount of hair and wanted a big chop . She was going through a breakup , writing a book , quitting her job , and starting her own business . She felt like her hair was
weighing her down and needed a clean palette to paint her new life . She cried happy tears as I shaved her hair off , and I felt a sense of relief and honor to play a part in the journey .
What advice do you have for hair care for both men and women ? Less is more . If you have dry hair , look for products that promote moisture that don ’ t contain alcohol . If you have oily hair , use a sulfate-free shampoo and a clarifying shampoo once a month .
What are your future aspirations for the Lady Clipper Barber Shop ?
We are looking forward to expanding soon , inviting new and aspiring barbers to join the Lady Clipper dream team . We must keep uplifting entrepreneurship in this space because it continues to open doors to so many opportunities .
