ENLS for Residency Programs
“
Residents often serve as front-line physicians in the management of Neurocritically ill patients . They are frequently confronted with the acutely deteriorating patient , whether in the emergency department , operating room , or hospital floors . These patients require immediate recognition and action to stabilize and preserve neurologic function . ENLS provides a framework for managing these extremely sick and rapidly changing patients in the acute period , most importantly during the critical Golden Hour . The course gives residents the tools to assess these patients and identify the most emergent interventions . The standardization allows residents to utilize a minimum amount of time , which arguably is the most important factor determining
neurologic outcome and survival . ENLS serves as an important training tool alongside ACLS , which allows residents to rapidly and confidently manage Neurocritically ill patients until they can receive definitive treatment . This can be particularly
helpful to trainees in non-neurologic specialties such as emergency medicine , anesthesia , surgery , internal medicine , and critical care . ENLS certification will benefit all residents in their approach to patients during the hyperacute period of neurologic injury . This is a time when there are often many unknowns and potential for wasted time , which would otherwise translate to worsened neurologic outcome . When working together with ENLS-trained nurses ,
pharmacists , and first responders , ENLS-trained residents provide consistent , rapid , and evidence-based care to some of the most critically ill patients treated in the hospital .
