Connecting America

The west and the east seemed so far apart, but thanks to this astonishing invention, they do not anymore. The transcontinental railroad is one of the most helpful inventions in the United States. This remarkable creation benefits us in many ways including the fact that transportation is much faster. Instead of months, traveling from the east to the west now takes about a week. Also, the west’s population is increasing dramatically due to the railroad. Goods are also being shipped more easily from coast to coast, creating an economic increase. Loved ones are receiving letters quicker since they are being sent using the railroad. Unlike a covered wagon, the railroad provides a safe trip away from the dangers of wildlife.

The Union Pacific began building west and the Central Pacific began building east. May 10, 1869, is when the two lines finally meet in Promontory Point, Utah. A grand celebration is being held there and the highlight of the ceremony is the hammering of the silver, iron, and golden spikes. Important people hammer them in place, completing the transcontinental railroad. The United States of America is finally united all thanks to the transcontinental railroad.
