Daisy Buchanan lives in the East Egg, meaning she is rich and has been rich her entire life. A few years ago she fell in love with a young lieutenant named Gatsby. They were both young and the relationship was short. Later she married Tom Buchanan, who was also part of a wealthy family living in East Egg. Clearly money was important to both of them and “the day before the wedding [he] gave her a string of pearls valued at three hundred and fifty thousand dollars” (pg. 76). Their relationship is strained and Daisy knows that Tom has cheated on her multiple times. However, Daisy continues to stay with him and live an extravagant and wealthy lifestyle.

When Gatsby returned, Daisy was reminded of the love she felt for him many years ago. She knows she is unhappy with Tom and asks “Gatsby? […] What Gatsby?” (pg. 11) when she hears Jordan mention him. During the time that they were apart, Gatsby dreamed of meeting with Daisy again and has even bought a house across the bay in order to do so. Gatsby wants Daisy to tell Tom that she never loved him but Daisy is unsure what she wants to do. In the time that they were apart, both Gatsby and Daisy have changed. Daisy has grown and Gatsby has become rich. Although she loves Gatsby, his West Egg new money life, is not the same as the life she had with Tom. In the end shed could not tell Gatsby that she no longer loved Tom because she did still have feelings for him, and his East Egg life style.
