It’s the worst thing that can happen. Right in the middle of June, during a heat wave, the power goes out. I know right? Just pure bad luck; or it’s just the entire city of New York using their air conditioners on full blast. But Brittney said it isn’t just bad luck. She said that something weird is going on. Normally I wouldn’t listen to a thirteen-year-old, but Brittney is smart enough to graduate high school, that’s why she hangs out with her older brother lance and I. She doesn’t hang out with the other kids her age cause their too immature and those we would have to do. Lance always wondered how i could stand her, its fine though Brittney was always pulled her own weight.

What was I writing about? Oh, yeah. Well let me clear things up. My name is Wiley temple, yes I know, like Wiley Coyote from the loony tunes. I get made fun of a lot by the other kids for it but I don’t mind. Moving on, I’m fifteen and I live in New York City, New York. I live in a Las Hermanas orphanage; but what I really want to do with my life is to travel and go on adventures. Yeah I know pretty lame, but its what I want to do with my life. My best friend is Lance Ellison, and to some extent his little sister Brittney. I started this log, journal, whatever its called cause i need to write down my thoughts.

Well, the power went out three days ago, if you haven’t figured it out already. It sucks, cause we were in Lance’s room, all three of us, and we were watching the latest episode of “The Island” right when Angelina hears the sound of a possible rescue chopper, The power cuts and were left wondering what ever happened. And now its dark, and I’m writing by candlelight. And not to mention it’s the hottest summer in twenty years, definitely feels like it, I’m sweating here just writing this. Jeez, what a crazy couple of days.

It’s been forever since the power went out. I think something’s very wrong, the heat isn’t letting up, its too hot for anything to go on outside. Lance cracked an egg out onto the sidewalk and we watched it fry almost instantly and within 5 minutes it burned black. All of the ice cream is gone. The other orphans ate all of them and everything else in the freezer is going bad because they can’t keep all the meat cool enough. By this rate we might run out of perishable food items and be stuck with gross beans in a can.

I’ve been stuck in this building for forever now. The nuns wont let out because when we were hanging out, three kids suffered a heat stroke outside and now we aren’t allowed outside. This is crazy, were all going to die from boredom before anything else. And it’s been so hot, too. I heard from Greg, this kid my age whose room is down the hall a bit from mine, that it was so hot in one part of the city, a skyscraper reflected all the light on some parked cars and they started to melt. The tires, or what was left of them were nothing but a puddle on the street. I just hope that either the power goes back on or the heat wave stops before were all bake in here like a microwave.

Sister Margret died yesterday. She was too dehydrated. The day before yesterday the water stopped running. All we had left was the water already in the tower, so the nuns were trying to conserve it. All the younger ones drank more and the older ones less. Sister Margret was already very elderly, and Brittney was sobbing over her, sister Margret cared over her the most. Lance tried to cheer her up by saying that elderly people usually die during heat waves, but I don’t think that’s helping her. I want to do something, something to get our minds off of what happened but we cant. All everyone is doing is staying in their rooms, sweating everything off like a couple of old guys at a sauna.

Lance told me to not bother with this journal thing. He said it was a waste of time and energy. I’m still going to write in here though; what else am I suppose to do? I just want to go swim, maybe at the pool, but the city isn’t allowing people outside for their own safety. I peeked outside my window (its so bright outside I have to use my darkest sun glasses) and saw, what usually is a busy street, completely empty. And there was an entire flock of pigeon’s dead and kind of smoldering I think. Wow, I didn’t even think it was possible for things to get this bad.

The entire orphanage is moving. Were packing up what we can an taking a steam ship north, up to Canada. The reason is cause two of our kids already died from heat related causes, a twelve year old girl and her younger brother. I didn’t really know them, but her friend said they were going to take a swim in the pond at the park nearby. They didn’t even make it to the park. She apparently passed out on the way and her younger brother tried to drag her back but he wasn’t strong enough and, he too eventually passed out from heat exhaustion. I heard from one of my classmates who live in a different part of the city say there’s been hundreds of deaths that had something to do with this blistering heat wave. The government said children and the elderly must evacuate the city and go north because it was too dangerous here. Hopefully well all be able to make it to Canada safely, were going to stay with a branch of the orphanage over there. I’m going to miss this place but I guess I’m getting my wish because this is the start of an adventure.
