Child Labor Laws
By Anna Turnamian
In my opinion, Child labor is ridiculous. People hire kids as young as 3 years old to work in their factories because they have small hands and they fit in small places, and they can be paid less. People can be cruel to the children because there are always more children on the street that are in need of a job. Children are working long hours, up to 14 hours a day! Children make up 47% of the work force in Connecticut.
Children drop out of school so they can help provide for their families, and go work. About 2,000,000 school-age children were working 50- to 70-hour weeks. If they do not finish their work in the factory, some employers make the children take the work home to finish it. The children now do not get enough time to rest and play, and tend to get ill from being overworked.
Child labor is growing. People are hiring kids, just to get a little extra money. The factory conditions are not clean. They are dusty and unsanitary. Children are suffering from lung cancer and are getting ill from the terrible thing we call Child Labor. They can be cruel to the children because there are an abundance of children on the street, looking for jobs. Children do not only work to support their family, but people believed it kept them occupied, and children sometimes had no homes to go to. If parents couldn’t support them, they would turn them over to mill workers and farms.
