Transition Thursdays • This program is for recent graduates and current students who want to transition to Asnuntuck Community College, workforce, military or tech school but are not sure what to do? • 2020 Workshop Topics are listed below • Work with a counselor on your individualized program • Fee may apply for non-Enfield Adult Education students • Open to ALL community residents, small fee may apply Instructors: Karen Garvey/ Asnuntuck Community College Staff Thursday, September 17, 2020 Week 1: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. The focus of the first class is an evaluation of the student’s goals, strengths and weaknesses. The O’Net Computer system will be used to evaluate possible careers for exploration. Thursday, September 24, 2020 Week 2: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Further career exploration and discussion will center around job outlook and training required for entry into careers. Popular job sites will be studied and reviewed. Companies will be analyzed for their mission and employee benefits. The concept of paying it forward through philanthropy will be analyzed. Thursday, October 1, 2020 Week 3: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Career opportunities at Asnuntuck Community College will be presented. The admissions process and financial aid will be covered. Thursday, October 8, 2020 Week 4: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. The manufacturing program and opportunities at Asnuntuck will be reviewed. How careers are portrayed in the media, books, movies and advertising will be discussed. Thursday, October 15, 2020 Week 5: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Job interviewing will be studied. Students will have an opportunity to be an interviewer and interviewee. Transition Thursdays 2020 WORKSHOP TOPICS (Registration is recommended, but not required.) This is a one credit course offered for two hour sessions over eight weeks. The class is held in a computer lab at Asnuntuck. Attending all of the sessions and completing all of the assignments earns the student one full credit. Completing fewer assignments and attending fewer sessions will result in a lower amount of credit. The purpose of the course is to facilitate transition from where the student is now and where they would like to be. At any time, the students can request an individual session with the facilitator to discuss their transition. Grading will be done on in class and homework assignments. Writing prompts will be part of each class. Thursday, October 22, 2020 Week 6: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Students will learn how to write a resume and will complete their resume and a letter of introduction. Marketing techniques will be analyzed and students will apply these to their own job search. Thursday, October 29, 2020 Week 7: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. The terminology of the world of work, benefits, job applications and further career work will continue. Thursday, November 5, 2020 Week 8: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Students will present to the class their final resumes and letters of introduction for review. Articles related to the class topics will be shared. Final meetings will be held between the students and the facilitator. Thursday, November 12, 2020 Week 9: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Students will discuss and role play various real life work place situations. Students will have the opportunity to explore possible resolutions to these issues. Asking for a raise, discussing benefits, concerns and negotiating with a supervisor will be presented. Thursday, November 19, 2020 Week 10: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Students will visit the American Job Center to become familiar with the services offered. Students will also have the opportunity to take the Accuplacer placement exam. The procedures required to apply to college will also be reviewed. Final, individual meetings will take place with the instructor. 4.
