POSITIONING STATEMENT
Throughout exploring this unit I have
looked at a diverse range of theories
and topics within the field of interior
design. The main ideas that inspired me and
will guide my practice were theories on body
and perception in the world of dance, as well
as architecture. I liked how Yudell described
dancers having physical connection with
space, that will allow them to push it or pull it
further towards them. Users interacting with
space is a fundamental part of architectural
design but this research has inspired me to
create a building where the dancers and the
space animate as one as partners. Yudell also
quoted “Our bodies and our movements are in
constant dialogue with our buildings”, which
I think will play a part in aiding my design
process. Pirouette on the Orthographic Hinge
describes a standing figure becoming a symbol
as well as an element of the vertical axis. This is
also reflected in choreography notation to show
the movement of space.
We had a guest lecturer Nik Wakefield tell us
Spatial Practices. He talked about theatre as a
way of creating. Interior designers usually work
against constraints whereas performers are
usually free to push the boundaries. Therefore
by combining freedom with restriction one can
shine the light on something unconventionally
beautiful. The stage is a very vulnerable place
which relates to my interest in the lecture on
invisible women and how women and other
human biases can br oppressed by society. This
will inform my design as I will take into account
biases in design as well as the dance industry.
