ETHICAL VALUES AND CHALLENGES THAT
UNDERLIE THE EUROPEAN NURSE DIRECTORS
PROTO-CODE OF ETHICS AND CONDUCT
The 'European nurse directors proto-code of ethics and conduct' has a unique
character of framing moral principles and values of professional practice for nurse
leaders, in particular: competence, care, safety, staff, life-long learning and multi-
sectorial work. However, with the increased mobility of nurses integral to the
ongoing European immigration crises, accountability to 'WHO's Global code of
practice on the international recruitment of healthcare personnel (2010)'
provokes challenges to fair labour practices and ethical recruitment of nurses,
which have yet to be attained in various European countries. In this regard, critical
examination of the 'European nurse directors proto-code of ethics and conduct',
revealed an important gap; the value and moral conduct, specific to the ethical
recruitment and mobility of nurses across borders, is missing. Resolution of this
issue dictates European nurse leaders attention to expand the ethical
underpinnings of the current proto-code for congruence with WHO's core values
of humanity protection and well-being. References - The European nurse directors
