BEHIND THE CURTAIN: MANAGER VS LEADER
The difference between the managers and the leader which was designed by
Warren Bennis was used as the base for this pilot project. The aim was to identify
what makes dominant manager or leader characteristics The online non-validated
questionnaire was sent by e-mail. The questionnaire had 20 questions, 10 referring
to manager´s attributes and 10 to leader´s characteristics. The five-level Likert
scale was offered to answer the questions. The response was 37%, with 75 nursed
replying. As expected, 96% were female, out of which 47,3% were BsN and 49%
MN. More than 52,1% had 30 years of work experience and 34,2% of were
between 20 to 30 years old. The results are the following: 86,66% strongly agree
that trust inspires, 60,81% believe in doing the right things and 50,66% think it is
important to create values at work, while 56% of the them presume that focus has
to be on people. As far as the traditional hierarchy in the health care system is
concerned, 53,33% believe that administrative system is important and 51,35%
believe in doing things right. The results suggest that 84,39 % of the participants
in total have leader´s characteristic, while 69,46% of them exhibit manager's traits.
In order to engage staff in providing the best service to patients, head nurses have
to be leaders and lead the staff to achieve more than it is thought possible.
