DETERMINATION OF THE TRANSFORMATIONAL
LEADERSHIP PRACTICES OF UNIT CHARGE
NURSES AND THE NURSES' CONTROL OVER
NURSING PRACTICES
Aim: This descriptive study aimed to determine the transformational leadership
practices of unit charge nurses and nurses' control over nursing practices.
Background: Control over nursing practice provides using evidence-based
practices for high quality, safe and cost effective nursing care. Transformational
nurse leaders are needed to create a work environment in which nurses have
control over their practices Methods: The study consisted of 56 unit charge nurses
and 220 observer nurses working at two acute care hospitals. Data were collected
through Nurses Data Sheet, Leadership Practices Inventory Self /Observer and
Control Over Nursing Practice Scale. Results: The mean score of UCN's was 129.55.
There was no statistically significant difference between the UCNs' and observer
nurses' mean scores on total leadership practices or score averages on other
leadership practices (p˃0.05). The average score of unit charge nurses' control
over nursing practices was found as 121.12, which was statistically significantly
higher than that of the observer nurses' score (106.06) (p=0.001). A weak (r=0.425,
