Your apprenticeship will take you 12-18 months to complete and during this time you will be supported by your Employer, and your Training Provider (if your employer is not a registered main training provider).

The need to establish an industry-recognised standard, to create a professional train driver workforce was realised and this led to the creation of the Train Driver apprenticeship standard by Train and Freight Operating Companies (TOCs & FOCs).

The Trailblazer Group created this apprenticeship standard for all train drivers, whether you are a Passenger train driver, Depot driver, Freight train driver or an On-track machine driver.

Train Driver Profile

All train Drivers are responsible for driving trains in a safe, punctual, economic manner over various routes in accordance with rail rules, regulations and procedures. A Train Driver could work in a number of rail environments, such as high speed, passenger, freight, underground, metro, suburban, cross border, depots, sidings or maintenance sheds; moving passengers, goods, empty coaching stock or driving on-track machines to perform infrastructure maintenance work.

Once you have been approved at Gateway, you will pass from your training provider to us for your final assessment. They will also provide us with any special considerations/supplementary information that we need to know.

We will allocate an CIRO Invigilator to you who will support you through the End-Point Assessment (EPA) phase of the apprenticeship. They will contact you and provide you with all the information that you need. They will be your main contact throughout this phase, and they will answer any questions you may have.

We will also allocate an Independent Assessor who has relevant occupational experience and relevant assessment experience and expertise.

EPA is an assessment of the knowledge, skills and behaviours that you have learned throughout your apprenticeship, which confirms that you are occupationally competent. There are 3 methods of assessment required by this apprenticeship standard:

•                 Observation (Planned, Degraded & Emergency)

•                 Online Test

•                 Professional Discussion

End-Point

Assessment

The final grade of your apprenticeship is determined by your IRO EPA assessor based on your performance in the observation and professional discussion and your online test results. You will be awarded a Pass/Fail for each component. You must pass each component to successfully complete your apprenticeship. We will confirm the final, overall result of your apprenticeship to you within 10 working days of your assessment.

The overall grade for your apprenticeship of either Pass or Fail as outlined in the grading criteria detailed in the Train Driver Level 3 Standard and Assessment plan.

Once you have successfully completed your EPA, we will claim for your apprenticeship certificate from the Apprenticeship Assessment Service on your behalf. We ask for your permission to do this at the end of your assessment and the final certificate will then be sent to your employer.
