Ruth Reinhardt, 14 & Music Director of the Carmina Burana
Rhode Island Philharmonic
What first drew you to conducting, and how did you know it was the right path for you? I actually stumbled upon conducting by accident. The conductor of my youth orchestra asked if I would be interested in trying it, and before I knew it I was completely hooked. Looking back, it makes total sense that I was immediately captivated by it. Conducting combines so many aspects that I had been interested in individually— score study and analysis, decision-making and learning how to incorporate musical ideas from all the musicians while still creating one coherent interpretation.
How would you describe your personal philosophy or style as a conductor? For me it’ s very important that performances feel alive and spontaneous; like a conversation between the musicians, the conductor, the soloist and the audience. At its core, music is about human connection. In my conducting, I try to leave space for that connection to happen. I come in with a clear musical vision, but I also listen closely to the orchestra; paying attention to its strengths, how the musicians shape their soli, and allowing those qualities to influence the overall interpretation.
What do you consider the core mission of the RI Philharmonic under your leadership? The core mission of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra & Music School is using music to inspire, connect and make a difference in people’ s lives. Whether it’ s through performances, outreach or music lessons for all ages, the organization works to spark a lifelong love of music and be a key part of the local community.
