THEY SAY YOU CAN ’ T GO HOME

I am sure there is good reason to say you can ’ t go home , but I always like to test it !

I recently made a return trip back to my old college stomping grounds and observed many changes since the days of my higher education . Although it was not my home town , it was where I spent four years and thus became like a home , I guess .
I still have a lot of memories of my days at Georgetown College and the city itself . Not much has changed on campus and the same can be said for the downtown . The total growth of the county , thanks to Toyota , has changed a great deal . One of the biggest changes that surprised me was with the eating establishments .
Now back in the day , Scott County was dry so no major restaurant wanted to here due to the fact of no bar sales . Therefore , the county and town were dotted with local joints . Now many of these local places were frequented well into the night after we found out a way to break the dry code - five miles out of town on the road to Frank ’ s and all was well .
Back in those days , 21 was the legal age for consuming adult beverages . It seemed more of a suggestion than a law . Times have changed .
In January , I met a Fraternity brother who had not been to Georgetown in a number of years and we took a farewell tour together . ( Not sure why I called it a farewell tour but it had a nice ring to it .)
As we made our way into town , our first memory was Susie ’ s . That was a diner in the front of an old motor court . You could always get a cold draft beer served in a water glass and enjoy the day . I loved the place because of the ad on their marquee for the rooms - Steam Heat !
The motor court and the sign are still there but Susie ’ s is now Red State Bar-B-Q ! It ’ s just not the same !
Our next stop was at the aforementioned Frank ’ s . It was long since closed , as the only reminder of the good old days was a tattered sign saying West Liquors and overgrown weeds in the parking lot . Across the street was Sam ’ s Truck Stop , gone as well .
Now this was an authentic old truck stop in the 40 ’ s , 50 ’ s and 60 ’ s . It was the kind of truck stop that Red Sovin and all of the old country and western singers sang about . Sitting on US 25 and no interstate in sight , you can image the number of meals and lies that have been told inside that old building .
Right beside Frank ’ s was the Lone Star Inn . Gone as well ! It was not much of a place for eating unless you liked frozen pizza from a desk top oven or pickled eggs . But the beer was cold and it had great bumper pool tables in the middle . This was the scene of the after-hours Late Night Raid in the spring of ’ 76 . Thank goodness I was 21 , but the 17 year old townie was not as lucky with her fake ID . Oops .
As we ventured into town , we discover the old two lane road is now a four lane road with all landmarks removed . Nothing to recognize the spot where my roomie was escorted into town with Gilbert in the back seat of the squad car .
We continued looking for familiar places . Burger Queen , gone . We were so small that McDonald ’ s had not arrived yet . The Spoon on Broadway , gone . That was a great spot to catch a midnight meal after your trip from Frank ’ s . I never knew the real name of the place so

we just called it The Spoon . Big John ’ s , gone . This was a great place to send a pledge , too , at 2am if you needed a big ole greasy burger to settle your stomach after a long night of studies !
I do think the biggest disappointment was when we left town headed for Great Crossings community , the site of Jamie Taylor ’ s farm . Now this was a farm where we had some of the greatest pig roasts around , so it can qualify as an eating establishment .
Brother Jamie opened his farm up to many years of KA parties and was tragically killed in a farming accident years later . I guess the parties came to an end and now the end included the portion of his farm that we used is a County Park . Not only that but beside it is a school and one more being built , Great Crossings High School - how could time have done this to us !
As we ended our tour , we did stop into the Campus Bookstore to check out the goods and were rewarded with a Senior Discount when we purchased some shirts . I thanked the young lady for her honoring us in such a way ! I would like to think that the discount was their way of saying “ Thank You , Gary and Tom ” for your many accomplishments while you were a student .” But alas , I am sure it was just to get us out of there so she did not have to hear one more Good Old Days story .
Now , as I said in the beginning , they say you can ’ t go home . I am here to tell you that you can go home . You just might not recognize some of the places !
Rockland United Methodist Church needs your help ! We are having a chicken-q on Saturday , May 13 , 2017 from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm to raise money for renovations to our steeple .
Come by and see our steeple and get some barbecue chicken . We will have plates with ½ barbecued chicken , baked beans , cole slaw , bread and beverage for $ 8.00 and also barbecue chicken sandwich , chips and beverage for $ 5.00 . We will also have fried apple and peach pies for sale .
