UAB eMedicine 2020 Report
UAB eMedicine is striving to create a telehealth research core to facilitate decentralized telehealth clinical trials and research , thanks to Orlando Gutierrez , MD , and Mark Marchant . Some of the grants involving telehealth that were funded and / or implemented in 2020 include :
• A $ 1 million Federal Communications Commission grant that helped facilitate UAB ’ s telehealth transformation
• Jeffrey Curtis , MD , received a $ 400,000 American College of Rheumatology Research Foundation grant to participate in the Telehealth-delivered Healthcare to Improve Care – THRIVE in community-practice rheumatology .
• Luisa Wetta , MD , with Maternal-Fetal Medicine is working to expand outpatient telehealth services to North Alabama Medical Center with the resources of our Appalachian Regional Commission Grant .
• Li Li , MD , PhD , with the Department of Psychiatry received $ 499,906 from the OUD Health Information Exchange for managing opioid use disorder .
• Palliative Care received two telehealth-related grants , including a PCORI Lung Cancer Study and an R01 related to the delivery of palliative care using telehealth .
• A Daniel Foundation Grant facilitated the creation of an outpatient tele-cardiology clinic at John Paul Jones Hospital in Camden , Ala ., thanks to Gilbert Perry , MD , and Crystal Gilliland , and an outpatient tele-rheumatology clinic at Whitfield Regional Hospital , thanks to Laura Hughes , MD .
• Timothy Garvey , MD , and Andrea Cherrington , MD , received a $ 932,000 Chronic Disease and the Reduction of Health Disparities Supplement to augment the Diabetes Research Center award from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases .
• UAB received three U . S . Department of Agriculture grants totaling approximately $ 1.3 million for equipment to deploy inpatient telehealth services .
