Alfons Mucha( 1860-1939)
Alfons Mucha was a Czech Art Nouveau painter, best known for his original style. Even though he was born in Austria-Hungary, he is associated with Paris and New York City, where he has lived and worked. He is a Nazi victim as he was imprisoned in 1939 by them. Shortly after that he was released, but during his prison sentence he got a lung infection.
His masterpiece is called The Slav Epic, a series of 20 big paintings describing history of Czechs, Slavs in general. Appreciation of his work came long after his death. Nowadays Ivan Lendl, former no. 1 tennis player, has one of the biggest collections of Mucha’ s paintings.
