Read A Book, Okay?
I like to read from time to time, I mean, who doesn’ t? But, unfortunately, I’ m not made of money( to be honest that would be mostly inconvenient) so I have to resort to more economic-friendly way to get the food for my mind.
If I hadn’ t been clear up to this point, by all of my rambling above I mean that my first steps often steer for the library.
Shaped like a giant shelves, with names of famous authors and everything, the library consists of two main floors – the children section and the adult section. Here you can choose in myriad of books from various areas of interests. Some are in foreign languages too, like German or Russian and, of course, English.
Help from the overseas
And just to add a little side story here. Our town has very low altitude so we, unfortunately, suffer from an awful lot of floods. The last major flooding occurred in 2013 and our library, situated unfortunately on the shore of the Labe River, was flooded and many books were destroyed.
What we hadn’ t expected was the help we were provided with. It turned out that there is sizable community of Czech immigrants and their children living in Iowa in the U. S. that were eager to help the country their parents and grandparents came from. They put together about 50,000 USD to help the Czech Republic recover from the flooding. The money went to the Děčín Library, along with number of English books.
But mind you, our town official had NO IDEA we were getting financial help. You can imagine the looks of surprise on their faces when they found out.( T. V.)
